Reflection (Save this one until the end of the semester):
1. Tell me something positive. What did you like about the Creative Writing class? 2. Tell me something negative. What didn't you like about the Creative Writing class? 3. Tell me something productive. What could I do for the students next year to make this class better? 4. Tell me what should stay. What should I do for the next year's class in exactly the same way I did for this class? 5. Tell me what should go. What should I completely remove for next year's class? 6. Tell me what to add. Is there something we didn't do in class this year that we should do in class next year? 7. Tell me something personal. Did you learn anything about your self or your own writing abilities in this class? |
Lost in Translation
You wake up one seemingly ordinary morning, and everything appears fine at first, but as you go about your day, you notice that you can no longer understand what the people around you are saying. It is as if they are speaking a completely foreign language. And when you try to explain the problem to them, you quickly realize that no one can understand what you're saying either . . . |
Hot and Cold:
Use these writing prompts: 1. Write about a time when you were too hot or too cold. Where were you? What were the circumstances? How did you alleviate your discomfort? Was anyone with you? Did the temperature affect them as well? 2. Write about your favorite season. (Taken from Writing from the Senses: 59 Exercises to Ignite Creativity and Revitalize Your Writing by Laura Deutsch) |
Clothing Reflection:
Write about the following: 1. Tell me about your favorite piece of clothing, now or in the past. 2. What colors and fabrics do you like to wear? What is your standard uniform? 3. Describe the clothing one of your characters is likely to wear. Let the clothing reveal aspects of the person's life and style. Inspired by Art:
Choose a work of art (any work of art is great!) to examine, and use its subject matter to inspire a short story. Click the link to the Louvre's website to view some incredible artwork. Hint: The featured works of Vermeer have a certain enigmatic quality to them that could spark some creativity! (left) Johannes Vermeer's Femme a la Balance, National Gallery of Art, Washington DC |
Boxed In:
Psychic/ telekenetic mimes terrorize civilians by holding them for ransom in invisible boxes. The city's only hope is a rogue mime who was dismissed from the evil crew for speaking a single word. What was the word? How will the mime overpower the superior numbers of his former gang? (Taken from 100 Prompts for Science Fiction Writers by Leslie and Jarod Anderson) |
