Modules
This course will be divided into six modules that will each last approximately three weeks. At the heart of each module will be a central writing assignment:
Module 1. Descriptive Writing: Environmental Sketch Assignment

Module 3. Narrative Writing: Personal Narrative Assignment
Module 4. Narrative Writing: Epistolary Fiction Assignment

Graded Activities
Generally, students will complete four graded activities within each module:
1. Journal Checks (25 pts. each)
Students will write in their journals during the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd weeks of each module. Journal assignments will include creative writing exercises, writing prompts based on readings or videos, grammar/ mechanics exercises, and planning/revision exercises, all of which will correspond directly with the central writing assignment. The focus of the journal is to strengthen student understanding of the modes of discourse, the literary forms, conventions, and the writing process.
2. Rough Drafts (10 pts. each)
The rough draft will be due at the end of the 2nd/ beginning of the 3rd week of each module. Students will be required to produce a rough draft of the central writing assignment, submit one copy to the instructor and keep one copy for a peer editing workshop. Full credit will be given for complete rough drafts.
3. Peer Edits (10 pts. each)
The peer edit will take place at the beginning of the 3rd week of each module. Students will edit one another's rough drafts in small groups with the help of a rubric or checklist.
4. Polished Drafts (30 pts. each)
The polished draft will be due at the end of the 3rd week. Students will submit one copy electronically through an originality checker and one copy manually to the instructor to be graded.

5. Tests (20 pts. each)
In addition, students will complete three tests over the course of the semester: Description, Narration & Poetry.
Final Exam
At the end of the semester, students will complete an online portfolio to showcase their work and reflect upon their learning. This portfolio will serve as their final exam grade.
